Inspired by The Spiral Group’s legacy, co-founded by Romare Bearden in 1963, this website embodies the collective's spirit of artistic collaboration, historical reckoning, and shared vision. We embrace a minimalist, intentional, and resourceful approach to archiving, extending this ethos into the digital space.
Grounded in Maya Harakawa's research on radical Black traditions, art history, and activism, the site challenges dominant narratives and offers a space for reflection, discovery, and dialogue. Designed with an archival sensibility, it prioritizes clarity and accessibility while remaining adaptable to change.
The black-and-white color scheme, inspired by the flyer for Spiral's first group exhibition, echoes its bold simplicity and quiet strength. This connection to Spiral reflects the profound ways in which art shapes our perception, memory, and imagination.
As Maya's research evolves, so too will this site—an ever-expanding hub for inquiry, engagement, and the ongoing exploration of art's role in the world.
